Final cut of music video

This is the final cut of our music video which has now been uploaded to YouTube. Considering the amount of work and time that has gone into it, I am very pleased with the outcome.
The pre-production, production and post-production has really paid off.
We edited it all on Final Cut Pro, cutting the video to the beat and trying to include the main themes.

The strengths that I found with the final product are that we managed to make it very different from the conventional music videos seen nowadays. I like the bright saturated colours and psychadellic atmosphere when entering the house, and I feel it conforms to our star image.

The pre-roll works quite well for me and we added in non-diegetic sounds of birds and footsteps. I think this went quite well especially as it was quite rushed when shooting this.

Overall, I am very pleased with the product, and I look forward to seeing what feedback is generated through YouTube.

Final Version of Digipak

Here is the final version of our digipak cover. We had major inspiration from other artists such as Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Eels, who tend to feature quite "trippy" and "psychadelic" colours and themes. We wanted to have a direct link back to our music video by using fairytale characters and themes and the colours are all linked as well. The front and back cover are quite simple and don't contain images of the band, because we wanted to conform to our star image of being arty and alternative. I think this would also appeal to the target audience because it would be the type of things they would find interesting.

I created this cover by sketching out these individual drawings on paper and scanning them into Photoshop. I overlayed them and changed the hues and saturations to link in with our theme.
We placed a Parental Advisory label on the front cover as we wanted to show that our target audience is young adults and older teenagers.

Overall I am very happy with how the digipak has come out and I think it strongly connects to our artist.

Our Poster

This is the final version of our advertisement poster for our artist. I created this using Photoshop and a picture I took on the shoot day.  I over saturated the colours ( much like the digipak and music video) and burnt the edges to make it darker. I edited in new media technologies such as the iPhone App store link, and the screen shot of the album cover.
I edited in Alice in Wonderland into the clock, as a sort of hidden message. The lead singer is also looking down to add a sense of mystery. I wanted this to address our target audience in a direct way, to grab their attention. The tour dates were put in the artists hat for a reason to draw attention to it.

Overall I am very happy with the poster and think it came out very well. I feel it really resembles our artist and links directly back to the themes and messages contained in the music video.

Task 3

Tuesday, 24 January 2012

Task 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

A music video can be very important for an artist in terms of their star image. Richard Dyer is an academic who specialises in star image says,

"A star is an image not a real person that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials (eg advertising, magazines etc as well as films [music]). "

When applying this theory to our music video, we wanted to make sure that we sold elements of the star image through different creative choices. As well as our video that creates the star image, we also wanted to demonstrate this through the use of the digipak and poster for our constructed artist.

In our music video, we specifically chose to have a completely over the top and exaggerated theme which meant that the costumes and appearences were "magical" and "weird". The use of this theme was to create a star image for our singer that created an aspect of craziness as well as slightly creepy. Originally we were really inspired by Panic At The Disco, so we were aiming for a similar image of quite arty and cinematic.

According to Dyer, a star is made out of two paradoxes. The first being that the star is "ordinary" and extraordinary at the same time. This is so that fans feel they can relate to them but at the same time look up to them.
Dyer said that the second paradox is that the star is to be absent and present at the same time. By this he means that the fans have all sorts of merchandise and feel connected to them at a concert, but at the same time they know that they will never be as close with them in reality.

The main star image we were hoping to create that links back to Dyer's theory of star image was:
- Originality
- Non mainstream

This is because our band "The Teacups" are an indie band and not aimed at a mainstream audience such as Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber.  To promote the star image of our band we made the ancillary products of the music video, digipak and poster. These are all key features in promoting an artist's image.
The video is the most important in my opinion, as it would be watched by the new audience for the band. I feel we made ours visually promising in terms of mise-en-scene and costume. Our aim was to be unconventional from many new videos and actually have a stronger narrative rather than the performance element because we thought it was necessary for our band to show of their creative and wacky star image. We used vibrant colours and over the top costumes to stand out from the crowd and live up to the originality trait of our star image. We also wanted to put emphasis onto the lead singer because he is the main part of the band and the source of the creativity part of the star image.

Our digipak features a pill on the outside with the bands name in red. This is quite unconventional for a new artist as most would feature the artists on the cover to make them recognisable. We didn't even feature the artist on the inside or that back cover which creates a sense of mystery for our star image
We decided to us the same colour palette from the video and make the inside covers the features. Our whole digipak was very arty and contains a lot of design, much like our music video. In terms of Dyer's theory this shows the originality side to our "star image".

The poster links in a lot with the video as it features the singer in the same costume as in the music video. This again reinforces Dyer's theory and shows the idea of creativity. We featured an image of the digipak in the bottom left hand corner to link it. Again this poster creates mystery as there is no eye contact with the artist. This makes our star image mysterious and reinforces the second paradox in Dyer's theory.

All of the ancillary tasks work together to create quite an unconventional star image for our artist. We aimed it all at an indie, arty audience hence the original and creative star image.

Task 1 - In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media products all develop and challenge forms of conventions in different ways. Here are six stills from my music video which display this.

This is a still showing the pre-roll in our video showing our main actress walking towards the house in which the video is set. It uses the formal element of having a strong narrative which can be seen in many music videos. This pre-roll scene is very different to the parts when the music starts, as there is no break to the continuity editing. This is however quite different as it is very common for the continuity editing to be broken in music videos.
Even though the pre-roll follows the formal element of a narrative, it isn't that common to have a pre-roll and therefore doesn't necessarily follow any of the conventions. In my opinion, this is what makes the pre-roll challenge the generic conventions. This cinematic effect works for the target audience, as the music video is self is very film-like and so the target audience of young adults who are quite arty, would be interested by this. Another video which does the same is Thriller by Michael Jackson which in itself is a very unconventional music video, yet it was such a classic.

This is our main stairway in the chaotic fairytale house. This is when it is evident who all the characters are as the costumes and characters are quite easy to pick out. As this fairytale idea was the theme for our music video, it uses the thematic formal element. There is a very strong theme to our music video throughout which is why it tends to follow the conventions for a typical music video. However, we mix the thematic element with a sense of reality which is less common in mainstream music videos. I feel this works for our music video though because of the indie edge we were trying to achieve with our band and the audience who the video is aimed at. Another music video which is similar in the cinematic sense is Panic At The Disco and their song I Write Sins Not Tragedies. It is very similar in the way that there is a very strong narrative and a strange Tim Burton style fantasy to it.

This is another still from the music video which is a mid shot of the main stairway in the house showing two of the characters. It shows props such as apples and pills and the mise-en-scene is very detailed. This uses the symbolic formal element as the apples and costumes symbolise our whole fairytale element by allowing the audience to immediately link it to something they know. The pills however, symbolise something crazy and a darker edge which is what we aimed for our music video. Our target audience wuold hopefully be able to link these symbolic themes together because of the young age and interest in art and indie music.

This still from my music video shows the dramatic lighting which we used. In terms of our thematic fairytale appearence, the use of cinematic lighting becomes very conventional. But in terms of a music video for an upcoming artist, it is slightly breaking the rules of convention because of the unnatural lighting. Many music videos use unnatural lighting because it is not only used for effect but there is also more control over the aesthetics. This however does fit in with our psychodelic atmosphere.

This is a still of the performance element from our video.  We chose not to use the rest of the band and focus the performance element on the lead singer. This is conventional in the sense that the lead singer generally gets a lot of lime light, however an upcoming band or artist usually has a lot of performance element to promote the band's talent. But we focused more on our narrative as we thought it was important to the song, and also wanted to be slightly unconventional. By using the main character as our singer, this isn't seen as very conventional in a lot of music videos, however Panic At The Disco again, tend to use their lead singer in a very narrative way. I think our target audience can relate to this because it makes them feel engaged with the singer because of the eye contact with the camera, but he is then a huge part to the story as well.

This still shows parts shots we have used as intercutting to break up certain scenes. We used these to slowly edge the viewer into the teaparty scene. The use of intercutting is very conventional as it is seen a lot in many videos. This helps our audience to change to the teaparty scene gradually, without being suddenly drawn in and confusing them. It also adds a sense of mystery as why else would we suddenly introduce close ups of candy.

This distinctive tea party again is very conventional in terms of symbolism. We based it on a famous scene from Alice in Wonderland of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. This mixed with the lighting and smoke represents the fairytale and mysterious element of our music video. As this is our final scene, it works as the grand finale. This is again very cinematic which slightly breaks the rules of convention.

These are two sections from the digipak which develop and challenge the rules of convention.

Our aim was to have a huge burst of colour and pictures inside the cover which is a huge sybolisim to our video. The reason for this was to make the viewer feel connected to the idea of fairytale and fantasy.  As I edited the pictures on photoshop I made sure to make it extra psychodelic which has a close link to the idea of such crazy fantasy leading to some sort of "drug trip". In terms of matching our music video and genre of music, I would say the inside cover was quite conventional, however the use of such bright colours and no image of the band does break the rules.

This is the front cover of the digipak which is quite simple. This is quite a conventional album cover for this indie style music. However, a lot of new upcoming bands would have a picture of them or some way of recognising who they are which ours doesn't. Our writing is also quite small, but I think all of this works quite effectively as it makes the viewer engaged with the CD. This is why the inside cover is supposed to have such a huge impact. This front cover is quite similar to Red Hot Chilli Peppers cover for I'm With You which also features a drug on it. This was a design by Damien Hirst who is a very well known artist. The genre of music isn't that different so I would hope that the audience would link in to that arty culture.

This is our promotional poster for our band and how it develops or challenges the rules of convention.

This poster is very similar to our music video in terms of costume. As it is the lead singer, it is instantly relatable to the music video which makes it easy for the target audience to connect. I have put on tour dates and a link to the App Store because it gains easier access for the target audience to get involved. In terms of conventions, as it features the main band memeber it becomes quite conventional as most upcoming bands do. I also put a picture of the album cover to make it clear. I made sure to link the colours to the whole fairytale idea and I put in Alice In Wonderland to the clock to gain more mystery. The fact that the poster closely links to the music video, it becomes quite conventional and would make the viewer want to know more.

Account of editing phase and post-production

After shooting our video, it was time for the rough cut and then the final edit. We used Final Cut Pro to cut and edit our music video.  We started with a rough cut to put all of our clips roughly where we wanted them to get a vague idea of how it was going to look.

The first thing that was essential was linking up the music track to our lip sync and performance element. It didn't really account for the rest of our shots as it was mainly a narraive element that we had to place in ourselves. We found this a bit difficult at times because it kept slipping out of place, but we managed to get to grips with it after practise.

We started by cutting the pre-roll together which needed a lot of work because of the diegetic sound as it was speaking. We later edited this in soundtrack by putting in sounds of birds and footsteps to make it more realistic. This was relitively easy as it was similar to the thriller work from last year.

We used short cuts in sections of our video to the beat of the music to add the mystery and suspence, linking back to sections of the performance element. We realised that we never got round to shooting the band part and we were worried about how this would look. After our rough cut, we realised that it actually worked very nicely just having the lead singer lip sync throughout.
I found that my skills with Final Cut have developed a lot since using it in the past and I was a lot more confident with the tools. Once we started and got into the post-production, it became very easy and flowed well. We were finished in good time which allowed us to do some final retouches.
We used after effects to boost up the saturation to make the colours stand out.
Overall I am really happy with how the post-production went and I  feel we worked really well together as a group. I look forward to seeing the how the final product turns out with the digipak and poster alongside it.

Drafts of digipak and poster designs (and feedback)

I have been working on the digipak over the course and alongisde the music video. I wanted it to be very simple on the front and back, and when it is opened be big bright and colourful to create a sense of magic.
These are some of the sketches I have done and scanned in to Photoshop.
I used characters and themes from fairytales and I am going to edit this into being bright colours and quite psychadellic. This is because I wanted the inside of the digipak to be very distinctive and relate back to our music video when entering the house.

In terms of the poster, I think this will be mainly photography, I have pictures which I shot on the day which I want to edit into a more atmospheric poster plan. I think it would be good to have tour dates and a link to the digipak to keep the target audience involved at all times.
These themes and visuals which are seen throughout the digipak can be linked directly back to the music video as well.

When it comes to feedback, the rest of the group agree with the ideas I have for the digipak and poster. Other people I have mentioned it to find it a great idea but it is also hard to visualise until the music video is complete as some of these themes and visuals are hard to comprehend.

Account of Shoot Day

Our shoot day was a very long day which ended being extremely successful and great fun. We started the day straight away at 9am and got our actors to have their hair and makeup done by kika. Our character the Mad Hatter played by Jamie was inspired by the Tim Burton character from Alice in Wonderland. The make up took a lot longer than expected but this gave us enough time to finish setting up our shoot with things that we didn’t get to finish the night before. The first set was the tea party scene which looked great as we had loads of props.
This scene took a while to film as we had to do a lot of takes using different camera angles and close ups on all of the characters. All of the actors did a great job and Rose and Oscar were very patient as there was a lot of the same shot done. As we had a lot of sweets and cakes as props on the table, we thought it would be a great idea to take advantage of this and made sure we got some close up panning shots down the table. The lens that we used during this showed a higher level of detail in our video.
During this scene we did encounter a few obstacles along the way. One of these included the shot of Sabrina falling into the cake. Luckily this didn’t turn into a problem as it all went to plan, but we only had one cake and had already used our prop cake so if it didn’t work then we would have been in trouble.
The other hurdle that we came across was when we had to throw balloons in to the background. At times it was difficult to see when I was in shot as I was covered by a huge cloud of smoke.
I think the main problem we had that day was that 3 out of the 4 members in that scene had to leave due to other commitments so we were unfortunately unable to get our perfomance element shot and decided we should just cut it.
After a quick lunch break we were able to grab out singer Jamie to do a few lip syncs of the song. This was great fun to film as he fitted the role perfectly. We also changed the setting around to give it a different atmosphere. Here we made it smokey with tall white blocks with sweets on top. Again we threw balloons into the scene to give it a quirky effect.
When we were shooting in the studio, we all revolved around the equipment and took turns on the camera and on set. I mainly enjoyed getting hands on with the set as it was fun but I made sure I was behind the camera some of the time.
After we were finished in the studio we made our way to Courtney’s house to finish filming. All of our characters (Cinderella, Belle, Prince Charming, Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty) already had their hair and make-up done before hand so that all that was needed was to get into costume and set up the camera and lights. It was then just Courtney and I that had to get our hair and make up done and into our costumes.
The setting and the stairs was already decorated perfectly the previous night which was lucky as by this point we were already strapped for time. This was one of my favourite shots as we did a tracking shot of all of the characters on the stairs. This included all of our cast members including me who was nowdressed as Snow White! In terms of the lighting in this scene, we gave it a red tint to create a sense of atmosphere and create a dramatic effect. This worked really well for us as it made it all look quite dreamy which was what we had in mind.

Once the staircase scene was finished, we then moved on to our upstairs scenes which included a hallway scene, a bedroom and a bathroom scene. By this point I was very tired as it was nearing 5pm and the day had been pretty full on.
For the bedroom scene we used low lighting with candles to give it an authentic feel. We also used candles and red lighting in the bedroom scene with Courney and Max in bed, and used a flicker effect over the lights to make it look romantic. This scene took a good few takes as it was hard for our actors to get the hold of it but we got there in the end!
Overall it was a very succesful day, however there are still the begining and end scenes which need to be filmed as well as the pre-roll.

Our Animatic and feedback

Once we had completed our storyboard, we filmed each individual picture up against the wall so that when it came to editing, we could put them all together and create our animatic.
The whole editing process was quite quick considering there were a lot of individual drawings from our storyboard. We did however encounter a few problems with Final Cut and found that it crashed a few times and lost our animatic. It was okay though as we quickly caught up.
During the feedback session where we played the animatic to the class and teachers, we received a lot of feedback. It was apparent that the performance element was a bit confusing and we were advised to inter cut the band throughout our whole video. A lot of the pictures came across unclear and so when it came to the sets we found that the tea party scene really needs to go full out with props and set design.
The ending was also unclear as there was a misunderstanding with the age of the actors and how it might look strange with a young girl at school with a teenager. This is something we need to think about in terms of when it comes to our production. We thought about maybe changing small elements but we still need to finalise the end.
The chaotic scene in the hallway was also a scene that we need to think through as it is our main wide shot and is featured a lot throughout. We have been told to think about who is in the scene, what aer they wearing and what are they doing as it has to maintain a sense of continuity to look good.
This then led to the upstairs scene which means there must be something in the hallway as a reason for the girl to be running upstairs, otherwise it could look strange just running from nothing.
The only other thing to sort out and finalise is the props and costumes but that will all be sorted for the final production.
Overall our animatic will be really helpful when it comes to our production and I found that it worked really well for our group.

Now that we know where are locations are going to be we can roughly manage to write out a schedule:

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16TH 2011

Start - 8:30AM - HURTWOOD STUDIO - The Tea Party Room Sequence
                                   The Bedroom Scene

                                   Stairs/Exterior /Corridor Scene.
        8:00PM - Finish.

Obviously there are no breaks and this is just a very rough first draft, when we come together on Monday we will all work together to finalize a shooting schedule as well as re-contacting our actors and officially confirming them for the shooting day.

Costumes

For our costumes, we don't want our house to just look like a house party, so we figured we needed some authenticity. For this we have decided not to use typical fancy dress costumes but instead to dirty the costumes and make them look scruffy with dark make up and messy hair. We are thinking of using a hire company which we obviously won't be able to make dirty but we can make up for this with the make up and hair.
We are going to look at the Hurtwood Costume department but also a few hire shops that are local.

Location

Originally we wanted a traditional old looking building for the set for our video to give an authentic look which we could make into our "haunted" house. We wanted to use Leith Hill house which is owned by the National Trust and is empty and nearby so it would have been great. We found many disadvantages with the house though and realised we would have to actually book an appointment to check out the place which wasn't good for us as we would have to make a few visits. We also realised that as the house is bare we would have to supply our own furniture which would be pretty much impossible.
We also realised that we would have lighting problems and would have to hire a generator.

Eventually we just came to a decision to use Courtney's house as it was ideal and close to school. The setting inside the house was also ideal as there is a great staircase and many rooms that we could use. This also means that we can make the house look how we wanted to with furniture and decorations.

Digipak Covers

For part of the remainder of the project, we have to design a digipak cover which we haven't yet completed. This album cover that we design has to represent our band through an artwork or image. In my mind for our hypothetical band The Teacups would have an edgy and arty album cover.
There are a few album covers which will give us inspiration to create it:
This album cover from Panic! at the Disco has an edgy dark but still happy vibe to it similar to our music video.

Other inspirations are:

These music covers are also of a similar genre to our band which means that the audience is similar. The colours and style are also close to what we imagined which is why it may work for our digipak cover.
